Community involvement has proved to be one of the most effective ways to combat crime. Crime has decreased significantly in all areas of South Africa where patrols have been implemented. Improved communication ensures that more members of the community react to distress calls and serves to relay vital information to the community.
Whilst community patrols are entirely voluntary, without remuneration and at the Patrollers cost, the benefits of safety and security to both yourself, your family and your community is almost impossible to put a price to.
The effectiveness of this initiative is dependent on the participation of the residents in the Gillitts 2 area. You are encouraged to speak to your neighbours and friends and colleagues that live in G2 and convince them to volunteer.
PURPOSE OF A PATROLLER
- To send a clear message to criminals that the residents in Gillitts 2 do not tolerate crime and that they are not afraid to report crime.
- To reduce and deter crime in the Gillitts 2 area (and surrounding areas).
- To be the eyes and ears of the various law enforcement agencies by identifying and reporting unsatisfactory safety and security issues to them.
- Vehicle patrols form the heart of this and further ensures visibility and vigilance in the area, thereby serving as a crime deterrent in the area.

- To build a reputation as a trustworthy partner to the other role players and law enforcement agencies by being competent in their judgement, actions, information supplied and requests for support.
- To be competent witnesses.
- To promote a favourable and trusting image of the Patrollers amongst community members and stakeholders.
- To always act ethically, honestly and fairly towards anyone encountered during a patrol.
- To assist residents to increase their security i.e. by alerting them of open gates, open garage doors or vehicles at risk.
